2017 is almost here. That means it is time to start thinking about the changes you will make in 2017. No doubt two of those resolutions are to save money and become more environmentally friendly. Luckily, you can kill two birds with one stone! Decreasing your energy use can say you a ton on your energy bills. One small change like programming your thermostat can lower your bill by as much as 10%. Here are a few green tips to help you save money in the new year!

  • Install a programmable thermostat
  • Let natural light (or lack of) heat and cool your home
  • Plant shady trees outside windows
  • Open windows in comfortable months
  • Seal drafty doors and windows
  • Upgrade your insulation
  • Install energy efficient light bulbs
  • Use power strips to cut down on phantom energy consumption
  • Switch old appliances with Energy Star ones
  • Lower the temperature on your hot water heater
  • Turn your washing machine to cool or warm, not hot
  • Install low-flow faucets and shower heads
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth
  • Decrease shower time
  • Turn off lights you aren’t using
  • Have HVAC equipment regularly maintained
  • Replace air filters as often as recommended
  • Consider home zoning
  • Only run your dishwasher when full
  • Layer on a blanket or sweater to keep from blasting the heat
  • Spend more time outside
  • Bike, carpool, walk, or take public transportation when possible
  • Recycle or reuse items in your home- great DIY opportunities
  • Be mindful of how much energy you’re using each month
