A leaky A/C unit can be a real headscratcher. It’s typical for an A/C unit to create some condensation as it’s a part of the cooling process, but excessive leaking can be cause for concern.

If you’re not sure why your unit is leaking, we may be able to help you out. We’ve listed some of the most common reasons for a leaky unit below!

Causes for a Leaky A/C Unit

Faulty condenser pump – Water leakage is a classic sign of a busted condenser pump. To test this hypothesis, pour water into the condenser pan. If the pump is functioning properly, it will pump the water. If it’s not, check your power. If your power’s good, you’ll probably need to repair the motor or the condenser itself.

Improper installation – If your unit wasn’t installed to industry standards, it could be unlevel or improperly hooked up. This could cause your unit to leak water. If this is the case, calling a professional HVAC contractor ASAP will help prevent further damage.

Excess pressure – If any vents to your unit are closed or blocked, this can create a pressure imbalance. This could lead to your unit leaking excessive amounts of water. Doing a quick double-check to make sure no vents are obstructed or closed could quickly solve this problem.

Clogged drain – The drain line that’s connected to your A/C unit is designed to remove excess water. If the line is clogged this could lead to an overabundance in water coming from your unit. Keeping it clean will ensure you don’t end up with a watery mess.
