There are a lot of news articles about how millennials are “killing” this or that industry. Could this be true for HVAC?

Millennials vs. baby boomers

This article is not going to be one that relies on stereotypes! But rather, we acknowledge that each generation is shaped by their own life experiences, by the economy, and by the changing culture. If someone was to get the idea that millennials are “killing” the HVAC industry, it might be based on the idea that millennials don’t own their homes. And we do see this reflected in statistics: only 43% of millennials own their home, while 77% of the baby boomer generation owns their home[1]. Yet, this fact doesn’t take millennials out of the running when it comes to being interested in HVAC. In fact, quite the opposite is true …

Millennials and the environment

According to Pew Research, the millennial generation is almost twice as likely as the baby boomer generation to say that the government is not doing enough to protect the environment[2]. What does this all mean in terms of the HVAC industry? Well, millennials want environmentally friendly HVAC systems.

More in common than we think

Of course, ANYONE of ANY age might feel this way! And that’s why, here at Air Specialist, we offer not only standard air conditioners, but premium and deluxe models. These make your system more efficient. Our SEER ratings for air conditioners start at 14, and they go up to the highest possible, 17! If you’re not sure what “SEER” means, it stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This relates to how much energy your air conditioner guzzles over one year — the higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the system. And of course, no matter WHO you are, you want that number to be as low as possible! We also design and install your new HVAC system according to ACCA (Air Conditioning Contractors of America) standards — which include prioritizing the environment.

Millennials and their phones

The other common stereotype is that millennials are always on their phones — but, rather than killing the HVAC industry, this goes “hand in hand” with the HVAC industry. With your phone in your hand, you can use WiFi-enabled smart thermostats, allowing you to control the temperature in your home even when you’re not there, and put smart settings at your fingertips! Again, of course, we understand that anyone of any generation is interested in these products. After all, they reduce your electric bill! Age is just a number There is really no fight to be had here — millennials aren’t killing the HVAC industry, because the HVAC industry can never be killed! People are always going to need heating and cooling, and we’re happy to meet everyone’s needs.
