When you need plumbing services, you want someone who has been specially trained and licensed to take on this important task. After providing HVAC services to the Houston area for more than 50 years, Air Specialist A/C Heating Plumbing & More is now offering plumbing services! Let’s look at what it takes to be a Texas plumber.
Texas plumbing license law
To perform professional HVAC, electrical, or plumbing work in Texas, you must hold a state license. Plumbers in Texas have different licenses depending on their training, experience, and competency in state examinations.
An apprentice plumber must have a high school or equivalent diploma. A college degree is unnecessary, but many vocational schools offer coursework for aspiring plumbers. While working as an apprentice, you do not need a license, but you must be registered with the state and work with an employer who sponsors your training. During your time as an apprentice plumber, you will be working directly under an experienced plumber.
A tradesman plumber license is available after at least two years of experience and 4,000 hours of work as an apprentice plumber.
Journeyman plumbers must pass the Journeyman Plumber Examination, which allows them to install, change, repair, service, or renovate plumbing. A journeyman plumber has logged at least 8,000 hours of experience under the supervision of a master plumber. A journeyman can also supervise an apprentice plumber in all instances and a tradesman plumber on certain jobsites.
A master plumber has the required training, experience, and technical knowledge to perform all plumbing services and supervise other individuals. Master plumbers must pass an examination by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Engineers. They must also carry general liability insurance.
