Hands fanning out many $100 bills

Did you know that you can get tax credits for having energy-efficient HVAC products? Today we’re going to tell YOU how you can save big!

Do you have energy-efficient HVAC equipment?

If you do, we want to let you know about an exciting opportunity being provided by ENERGY STAR and the U.S. government. Tax credits for energy-efficient equipment were recently EXTENDED to December 31st, 2020. So that means, if you’re due for new HVAC equipment and your old system is starting to cost you more and more money in energy bills and maintenance … you could end up saving money in the long run with an energy-efficient HVAC system. These savings are not only from tax credits, but also from the money you’ll save on your energy bills year after year!

Which equipment qualifies? How much money do I get?

These tax credits apply for HVAC equipment you had installed in the years 2018 – 2020. So if your new high-efficiency system was installed before that, it does not qualify for the energy-efficiency tax credit.

Now, you’re probably wondering which systems qualify as “energy efficient.” In order for a system to qualify, it has to be ENERGY STAR certified, meaning that it must meet certain SEER or AFUE requirements. (This is the system of measurement by which efficiency is determined for air conditioners and gas furnaces, respectively.) For a split-system air conditioner, the SEER level has to be equal to or greater than 16. For a regular package air conditioner, the SEER level would have to be equal to or greater than 14. You would be entitled to a tax credit amount of $300! For gas and oil furnaces, there is a rather steep requirement of 95+ AFUE (95% furnace efficiency level). If your gas furnace is ENERGY STAR certified, you receive a tax credit of $150.

What if I don’t have ENERGY STAR certified HVAC products?

If your equipment is ENERGY STAR certified, remember that the deadline to receive tax credits is December 31st, 2020. You should definitely take advantage of this deal! But if you don’t have certified HVAC equipment, then, are you completely out? Luckily, no! You still have a chance to receive tax credits for energy efficiency, IF you have made other environmentally friendly improvements on your home, such as:

– Solar panels or other solar equipment, purchased between 2017 – 2020

– Insulation/weather stripping, purchased between 2018 – 2020

– An environmentally-friendly, ENERGY STAR certified roof, purchased between 2018 – 2020

So if you have made any qualifying improvements to your home, we encourage you to check out the ENERGY STAR website to find out more about all of these deals, and how to apply them on your taxes! We also encourage you to consult your tax preparer / accountant, as we are no substitutes for giving tax advice!

However, some advice we ARE absolutely qualified to give is advice on your HVAC system!
